START Online – Safety Training and Rural Transit

START Online was developed from the National Rural Transit Assistance Program’s Safety Training and Rural Transit instructor-led course, through a partnership between CTEL and National RTAP. The online training was produced by Zipline Performance Group and the course content was updated in 2015 by Nusura, Inc.

How will I benefit from taking this course?

One of the most important responsibilities as a driver/operator is safety. This course provides driver/operators with the information and skills needed to fulfill that responsibility and meet the needs of their passengers.

  • It will show you procedures for the important pre-trip inspection, en-route, and post-trip vehicle inspections.
  • It will teach you the basics of safe vehicle operation, including fitness for duty, defensive driving, good safety habits, coping with adverse driving conditions, and other important aspects of driver/operator safety.
  • It will help you understand procedures for safely picking up and dropping off ambulatory and non-ambulatory passengers, securing mobility devices such as scooters and wheelchairs, handling difficult passengers, security awareness, vehicle evacuation, and other emergency situations, as well as skills for interacting with passengers to make every trip safer and more secure.

START Online is designed as an interactive e-learning experience. You can work through the training modules whenever you have time and access to the Internet, and can move at your own pace. You can also revisit the content as needed for refresher training.

Performance Based Financial Management

This is a course on performance based financial management for the transit industry. It reviews all the tools of accounting from chart of accounts to income statements to budgets and performance measures and applies them to transit. It discusses how federal guidelines are incorporated into transit finance and how to do a better job at grant management. This course assumes some knowledge in accounting. The format is present information, test your understanding and then apply it. This interaction makes the course engaging, memorable and fun. Check it out!
